The Position

Our client seeks to fill a Chief Credit Officer in the greater Plainfield, NJ market. The selected candidate will be responsible for ensuring the objectivity and accuracy of the loan risk rating system as outlined in the various loan policies. Maintaining a strong credit culture, strengthening the underwriting process, monitoring the risk trends in the loan portfolio and recommending policies and procedures for the safe and sound credit operations are also key elements of this position.

Chief Credit Officer responsibilities include:

  • Providing support and direction to the day-today operation of CRM comprising internal loan review, portfolio monitoring, appraisal and workout functions.
  • Providing oversight for an effective credit approval process within the company that supports the credit risk appetite of the Bank while also facilitating desired asset growth objectives.
  • Developing and maintaining standardized policies and procedures to assure the effective delivery of Credit Products for the bank and enhance the overall quality of the Bank’s loan portfolio.
  • Responding to internal and external regulators or auditor’s questions and requests.
  • Attending Loan, Allowance, ERM, DFAST, and CMA committees as a standing member.
  • Working with subordinate executives to assess overall soundness of the loan portfolio and advice on policy questions, business development, staff requirements, performance appraisals, and salary administration as they relate to the lending function.
  • Maintaining the commercial risk rating system through the daily review and sign-off of loan proposals or review type work product.
  • Presenting credit reporting to the Board of Directors, regulators, external auditors or as required.

  • Director of Internal Loan Review
  • Director of External Loan Review
  • Director of Appraisal & Environmental Services
  • Director of Portfolio Monitoring

Indirect Reports:

  • All employees reporting to Direct Reports
  • External and Vendor Relationships
  • CEIS Review – negotiate various loan review and stress test contracts. Interface on all levels with the CEIS owners and Managing Directors.
  • Audit Firms, FDIC, FRBNY, NJDOBI – strategic discussions as to audit and exam issues pertaining to credit risk.
  • Appraisers, review appraisers and environmental engineers – ultimately responsible for their actions or inactions as it pertains to risk in the loan portfolio.

You also bring the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a business oriented major such as finance or accounting. Advanced degree(s) or formal training in banking, credit risk management, appraisal, real estate, C&I, etc.
  • Formal credit training program.
  • Twenty or more years of commercial credit experience.
  • Five or more years of line lending experience.
  • Five or more years of complex workout experience.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, coaching and negotiation skills.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in C&I and commercial real estate lending, credit risk management and credit approval process.
  • Expertise in loan structure and administration including experience in business development.
  • Proven record of strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Prior leadership and management experience required.
  • Superior negotiation, relationship building and professional reliability.
