The Position

Our client is seeking to file a Commercial Underwriter role in the greater San Francisco, CA market. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing written, in-depth, credit analysis for C&I and CRE loans by underwriting the basics of commercial credit worthiness and identifying and analyzing sources of repayment ensuring compliance with the Bank’s credit risk management strategy and the Bank’s credit policy. They will also ensure all transactions and processes are in compliance with regulatory and company guidelines, policies and procedures.

This position offers a generous salary of up to $90K and full benefits package.

Commercial Underwriter responsibilities include:

  • Interpreting financial data, financial condition and level of risk related to various types of borrowing entities and individuals including financial statement analysis, collateral evaluations, trend analysis ratio and industry analysis.
  • Preparing written summary of loan terms and conditions and a written narrative explaining business background, outlining risk factors and justifying assigned risk rating
  • For CRE loans, conducting in-depth review of rent rolls, leases, balance sheets, income statements and tax returns presented by applicants to assess their ability to generate income sufficient to repay existing and proposed debt.
  • For C&I loans, conducting in-depth review of balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, tax returns, business plans and projections presented by applicants to assess their ability to generate income sufficient to repay existing and proposed debt.
  • Conducting thorough review of balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, tax returns, business plans and projections presented by applicants to assess their ability to generate income sufficient to repay existing and proposed debt on al C&I loans,
  • Identifying risks and assisting in structuring loan to mitigate risks. Assigning appropriate risk ratings.
  • Accompanying Commercial Bankers on customer visits on a regular basis.
  • Assisting senior team members and commercial bankers to screen loan packages and collect “due diligence” materials. May interact with customers and accountants to collect information on routine, non-controversial issues. Providing analytical support for developing and maintaining credit studies, financial background information and other relevant data on present and prospective customers. Reviewing appraisals and environmental reports.
  • Reviewing construction contracts, leases, appraisals, environmental assessment reports, UCC searches, flood determinations, insurance policies and other information to assess risks associated with the bank’s collateral position. Continue to develop knowledge of appraisal theory and approaches to values.
  • Interacting with account officers to negotiate loan terms and following up on information required to decision the application.
  • Complying with all bank policies, procedures, state and federal banking laws and regulations including Bank Secrecy Act, Anti-Money Laundering, Office of the Comptroller, of the Currency Control (OCC) and USA Patriot Act.

You also bring the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, accounting or economics.
  • Three or more years’ experience in Commercial Underwriting.
  • Experience with cash flow analysis, ratio analysis and projections is required.
  • Strong knowledge of real estate appraisal techniques, field audit examination techniques and commercial banking regulations required.
  • Formal bank commercial credit training is a plus.
  • Proficient in software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Solid qualitative and quantities analytical skills required.
  • Excellent analytical, conceptual, writing, and communication skills.
  • Possesses strong organizational skills and can work with limited supervision.
  • Existing knowledge of assigned marketplace preferred.
