The Position

Our Tennessee-based bank client is seeking to fill a Remote Mortgage Loan Underwriter role. The successful candidate will be analyzing and verifying loan applications and corresponding documentation, evaluating risks, and making loan eligibility decisions.

The position includes a generous salary of up to $120K and an excellent benefits package. (This is a remote position.)

Mortgage Loan Underwriter responsibilities include:

  • Evaluating the eligibility of various types of mortgage applications.
  • Reviewing and evaluating mortgage loans to ensure data integrity of the loan files.
  • Assuring that all mortgage applications are underwritten in compliance with the secondary market and/or credit union guidelines, as well as within credit union policies and procedures.
  • Conducting an overall risk assessment of credit, employment history, income, assets, and collateral.
  • Review underwriting decision, reasoning (logic), and conditions or counteroffer with appropriate parties.
  • Knowledge of mortgage loan processing and relevant legal regulations.
  • Consistently meet or exceed established internal turn times.
  • All other assigned duties.

You also bring the following skills and experience: 

  • Degree in business, banking, finance, or a related field preferred.
  • Five or more years of conventional/secondary market mortgage underwriting experience required.
  • Experience with Fannie, Freddie, and Jumbo loans.
  • Government loan experience is a plus.
  • Requires successful registration with, and issuance of a unique identification number from, the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) in compliance with the Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing Act of 2008 (SAFE Act).
  • Working knowledge of agency automated underwriting systems.
  • Working knowledge of self-employment income analysis, business structures, and current regulatory or agency changes.
  • Knowledge of appraisals and title work and ability to render decisions within secondary market and portfolio guidelines.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Detail-oriented with strong data analysis skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, automated underwriting systems and Encompass or similar mortgage loan origination software.
