The Position

Our Iowa-based bank client is seeking to fill a Remote Mortgage Loan Underwriter role. The successful candidate will be reviewing all residential real estate files to ensure loans comply with all bank loan policy requirements, investor underwriting guidelines, and federal compliance regulations.

The position includes a generous salary of up to $85K and an excellent benefits package. (This is a remote position.)

Mortgage Loan Underwriter responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining and managing the workflow for the mortgage operations department.
  • Reviewing and maintaining the workflow for all residential real estate loans.
  • Maintaining the secondary market pre and post-close quality control list and all associated duties.
  • Working closely with the Compliance Officer and Senior Mortgage Lender in various aspects of real estate lending.
  • Giving final approval on all residential mortgage loans and completing memos to support the underwriting decision.
  • Verifying file documentation is complete and accurate.
  • Ensuring that loans meet Ability to Repay and Fannie Mae guidelines.
  • Completing a final review of title work and establishing conditions to be cleared.
  • Submitting grant applications, applying for USDA guarantees, apply for current grants as available.
  • Identifying training opportunities and train lenders and processors as necessary.
  • Assisting with HMDA Scrub as needed.
  • Member of the Retail Service Committee.

You also bring the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in the field of business, including specific courses in accounting, finance, and economics; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Postgraduate industry-specific education preferred.
  • Experience specific to Mortgage Underwriting is preferred.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public both face-to-face and over the telephone.
  • Ability to solve practical problems; judgment and decision making; deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, spreadsheets, word processing, and database.
