The Position

Our client is seeking to fill a Mortgage Underwriting Supervisor role in the Milwaukee, WI market. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing and directing the daily operations of the mortgage underwriting staff as they review and underwrite FHA, VA, USDA, and Conventional mortgage loans.

This position comes with a generous competitive salary of up to $85K and a full benefits package.

Mortgage Underwriting Supervisor responsibilities include:

  • Supervising a team of underwriters and/or underwriting analysts and directs daily underwriting pipeline
  • Underwriting first mortgages according to credit union policy, FHA, VA, and/or secondary market guidelines that do not receive an automated approval.
  • Training new underwriters as they work through FHA and VA certification.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of all secondary market guidelines and disseminates and trains updates for the entire mortgage lending staff.
  • Reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating complex financial and asset statements, personal and business tax returns.
  • Qualifying and maintaining DE (FHA) and SAR (VA) certifications.
  • Recommending process improvements to the underwriting process.
  • Reviewing all denied and withdrawn mortgages applications, and performs post audits on select closed loans.
  • Facilitating regularly scheduled staff meetings to communicate information, and motivate, train, and develop the underwriting team.
  • Ensuring compliance with all external regulatory requirements and internal policies/procedures. Providing recommendations for process improvement and participates in special initiatives.
  • Providing staff training on any new products, programs, procedures or other topics affecting the underwriting department.
  • Working with Technology Officer to ensure underwriting systems are working and being utilized to their capacity.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

You also bring the following skills and experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, and previous supervisory experience.
  • Three years of experience underwriting FHA, VA, and USDA loans and comprehensive knowledge of the principal, methods, practices, and techniques of the evaluating all types of mortgage loan applications.
  • DE Underwriting Authority (CHUMS ID) for FHA Mortgages, VA SAR ID.
  • Knowledge of the secondary market and investor guidelines as well as federal laws, and bank policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience balancing multiple priorities and managing a variety of projects in a high-volume work environment with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, judgment, and managerial skills.
  • Strong knowledge of FNMA, FHLMC, FHA, USDA.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and discretion in various situations while maintaining a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and customer service skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented and strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to cope with a rapidly changing regulatory environment on a Federal and State level.
  • Strong computer skills.
