The Position

Our bank client is seeking to fill a Commercial Loan Underwriter role to be based in the Phoenix, AZ market. The successful candidate will perform an analysis of financial statements, cash flows, and tax returns. The candidate examines, evaluates, prepares Credit Requests, and authorizes or recommends approval of member applications for business loans to evaluate the financial position of the borrower and/or guarantor(s).

This position offers a generous base salary of up to $90K and an excellent benefits package. (This is a partially remote position.)

Commercial Loan Underwriter responsibilities include:

  • Gathering background information on members applying for business loans by interviewing applicants and obtaining needed financial exhibits.
  • Interviewing customers requesting refinance or loan re-write.
  • Assisting members with the loan applications process as needed.
  • Reviewing commercial loan applications and analyze credit information to make a general assessment of the applicant’s creditworthiness.
  • Determining whether the proposed loan will conform to the credit union’s lending policy.
  • Preparing written summary of loan terms and conditions and a written narrative explaining the business background, outlining risk factors and justifying assigned risk rating, ensuring conformity with credit union policy and procedures and with applicable banking regulations.
  • Ensuring that sound analysis and lending procedures are followed.
  • Facilitating and reviewing prepared loan documentation vs. requirements and assisting borrowers in loan closing.
  • Interacting with account officers to negotiate loan terms and follow up on information required to decision the application.
  • Reviewing construction contracts, leases, appraisals, environmental assessment reports, UCC searches, flood determinations, insurance policies, and other information to assess risks associated with the collateral position.
  • Conducting an in-depth review of rent rolls, leases, balance sheets, income statements, and tax returns presented by applicants to assess their ability to generate income sufficient to repay existing and proposed debt for CRE loans.
  • Conducting an in-depth review of balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, tax returns, business plans, and projections presented by applicants to assess their ability to generate income sufficient to repay existing and proposed debt for C&I loans.
  • Cross-selling lending and other products and services.
  • Assisting with training.
  • Performing other duties and special projects as needed.

You also bring the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, from four-year college or university, in finance or related field.
  • Three or more years’ experience in commercial lending.
  • Must have experience with cash flow analysis, ratio analysis, and projections.
  • Proven ability in commercial lending including lines of credit, term loans, and commercial real estate lending.
  • Strong analytical ability with effective written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Efficient use of Outlook, Word, and Excel applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
