The Position

Our bank client is seeking to fill a Sr. Accounting Officer role in the Newark, NJ market. The successful candidate will lead of team of Staff Accountants, Controllers, and Finance Support personnel. The candidate directs and coordinates the Bank’s financial and budget activities to fund operations, maximize investments, and increase efficiency and productivity.

The position includes a generous salary of up to $145K and an excellent benefits package. (This is not a remote position.)

Sr. Accounting Officer responsibilities include:

  • Directing the preparation of and managing budgets including those for the funding and implementation of programs, activities, and capital expenditures.
  • Directing the work of the finance and accounting department staff and ensuring adherence to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.
  • Assisting CFO with defining development and implementation of strategic business plans.
  • Partnering with CFO and senior staff members to identify and develop KPIs (key performance indicators) in support of the Bank’s strategic plan and evolving risk environment.
  • Assisting CFO with the preparation of standard monthly reports, and ad hoc financial information for the Board of Directors and Senior Management Staff.
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of the Bank’s fiscal plans and policies.
  • Developing and monitoring the implementation of the Bank’s accounting policies, procedures, and practices in compliance with GAAP and all regulatory and legal directives.
  • Developing new strategies, policies, and procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the finance and accounting functions as needed.
  • Establishing and maintaining adequate and reliable internal control structure and systems for tracking, recording, and reporting of the Bank’s financial and operational activities.
  • Overseeing preparation, dissemination, and reporting of financial information, including a budget, Board Reports, Regulatory Reports, and Management Reports.
  • Providing support to executives, and managers on the development and implementation of strategic and operational initiatives via timely, accurate, and credible financial and management information analyses, reporting, and recommendations.
  • Evaluating staff members’ job performance, including personal, interpersonal, and technical knowledge, skills, abilities, on a regular basis as determined by company procedures, and recommend appropriate actions.

You also bring the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration.
  • Ten or more years of experience in financial management in banking
  • Three or more years as a Controller (Community Banking a plus).
  • CPA required.
  • Expert knowledge of economic, accounting, and finance principles and practices, the financial markets, commercial banking, and the analysis and reporting of financial data under GAAP.
  • Expert knowledge of principles and practices relating to organizational design, workflow analysis, policy and procedure development, and risk management.
  • Expert knowledge of leadership, strategic planning, resource allocation, business administration, and management theories, principles, and practices.
  • High reasoning skills including the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through both written and oral formats.
  • Strong PC skills, with proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Office suite.
