The Position
Our client is seeking to fill a Commercial Loan Underwriter/Portfolio Manager role in the Sacramento, CA market. The successful candidate will be responsible for sound underwriting capacity, depth of experience in a wide variety of loan types and complexities, and the ability to manage a portfolio with limited supervision. They will also ensure all transactions and processes follow regulatory and company guidelines, policies, and procedures.
The position offers a generous salary of up to $120K plus bonus and a full benefits package.
Commercial Loan Underwriter/Portfolio Manager responsibilities include:
- Underwriting and originating of new credits from existing and/or new customers to include renewals, modifications, and annual reviews. Making appropriate loan structure recommendations.
- Reviewing and approving various commercial loans and lines following the bank’s credit policy and corresponding banking laws and regulations.
- Monitoring the loan portfolio to evaluate the quality of commercial credit.
- Analyzing financial data from borrowers for new, renewal, and existing business loans, including financial statements, tax returns, personal financial statements, financial projections, business plans, and information from credit bureaus and other financial institutions.
- Analyzing and assigning an appropriate risk rating to each borrower.
- Assisting in maintaining strong credit quality, including management of payment delinquencies, loan maturities, and ongoing portfolio management functions including financial statement monitoring, risk grade assessments, and covenant testing.
- Partnering with Commercial Lenders to gather relevant customer information for analysis, requesting additional information as needed.
- Preparing thorough, objective, and accurate loan presentations, illustrating the degree of risk involved in extending credit or lending money.
- Financial analysis and preparation of loan presentation packets for new credit requests, renewals and annual reviews.
- Developing and recommending strategies on existing loans to meet the Bank’s credit standards and to minimize loss potential.

You also bring the following skills and experience:
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in finance or accounting. Master’s Degree Preferred.
- Seven years or more experience working with commercial credit and underwriting.
- A good understanding of lending concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Strong computer skills and experience with MS Office products.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- General understanding of accounting terms and principals.
- Ability to read and interpret financial statements to include: Tax returns (individual and business), balance sheet, income statement, cash flow schedules, statement of the owner’s equity.
- Strong presentation skills.
- Ability to communicate with senior management, operational and technical staff, and peers.
