The Position

Our bank client is seeking to fill a Commercial Loan Underwriter role in the Los Angeles, CA market. The successful candidate will work closely with Business Loan Advisors to identify and manage the risk of commercial loan requests up to the credit union’s lending limitations. The candidate provides an independent comprehensive analysis of complex ownership structures and cash flow sources for commercial loans and relationships.

This position comes with a generous salary of up to $115K and a full benefits package.

Commercial Loan Underwriter responsibilities include:

  • Supporting loan and revenue growth through identification and management of risk and identification of alternative lending structures or terms when in the best interest of the credit union to meet policy standards.
  • Preparing and/or updating appropriate financial spreads within credit analysis software in accordance with established credit analysis procedures.
  • Reviewing loan requests submitted through underwriting workflow for completeness communicating any deficiencies with Business Loan Advisors to meet required decision turn-around expectations.
  • Preparing financial models on proposed commercial real estate transactions including submissions for rehabilitation and construction projects.
  • Determining the likelihood of repayment through historical and projected cash flow analysis to derive regular recurring cash flow available for debt service net of material non-recurring and extraordinary items.
  • Completing the appropriate risk rating model and submitting the finalized recommended risk rating to VP of Credit Risk for approval.
  • Preparing a comprehensive credit memorandum including detailed financial and credit analysis, strength and weaknesses of the credit, and identification and mitigation of policy exceptions.
  • Conducting in-depth review and analysis of commercial real estate requests inclusive of rent rolls, leases, balance sheets, income statements, and tax returns presented by applicants to assess the ability of the project to generate income sufficient to repay existing and proposed debt.
  • Finalizing credit package with conditions precedent as needed to ensure documentation personnel has a complete approval package.
  • Preparing Loan Summary Report and export file for documentation personnel.
  • Attending all departmental meetings prepared to discuss current workflow including the status of active underwriting requests and any loan package deficiencies delaying credit decisions.
  • Serving as back-up support for other Business Solutions functions on as-needed basis.

You also bring the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in finance or accounting, with a minimum of four (4) Accounting courses (12 hours) or equivalent experience analyzing business and personal tax returns.
  • Five or more years’ experience as a commercial credit analyst.
  • Must be detail-oriented and be able to read, understand, and closely follow Commercial Board Policy and all pertinent standard operating procedures.
  • Strong understanding of risk grading policy and application to each borrowing relationship.
  • Self-starter with independent decision-making ability and effective deductive reasoning to complete tasks under minimal supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possess a high level of problem-solving skills and sound judgment with the ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner.
